HEAVEN IS NOT YOUR ETERNAL HOME

March 12, 2016

For some of you I know this is shocking, but despite what you were taught heaven is not your eternal home. In my youth, our church sang the song, “When we all get to heaven what a day of rejoicing that will be.” and we believed when Jesus raptured the believers we would be with Him in heaven for eternity, but that is not what the scripture records.

From before the foundation of the world in the mind of God was a place (which we call earth) that He would create to be inhabited by man. Isaiah 45:18a states, “For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited” and Psalms 115:16 states “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.” Ultimately, earth with its inhabitants was to be a reflection of the invisible kingdom of heaven.

God made man in His likeness and image meaning man possessed His spiritual nature, essence, and characteristics. The man was designed to function, act, and be like God. Man was first a spirit being, then he was given a body made of the dust of the ground, next God breathed into man’s nostril the breath of life, and finally, the man became a living soul (Genesis 2:7).

Not only did God give man the earth but He also gave man these instructions, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28) and “Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). Under this mandate from God, the man had the awesome responsibility to be obedient, productive, rule and govern.

In Genesis 3 we see the failure and disobedience of man to God’s instructions and we also see the consequence of man’s action. However, God sent His Son to redeem man and for those that would accept the salvation that God offered Revelation 21-22 records that they will reside not in heaven but on earth in the New Jerusalem. In conclusion, God does not lie; He said earth was made for man, and that is where believers will be with Jesus for eternity.
