The ability to pray in the spirit/tongues comes with the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This is the privilege of every believer, and should be utilized daily.
Listen to the writings of Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:2- 4, 14. He says, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.” When a believer prays in spirit/tongues, only God knows what he is saying. Man, Satan nor demon forces cannot understand him; that is why praying in the spirit/tongues is our secret language for the battle against our enemies. Praying in the spirit also strengthens and builds you up
There are times when we are not able to adequately articulate our situation; however, as Paul states in Romans 8:26, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” God has provided help when we don’t know what to say. I believe too many times we have given the enemy ammunition with our audible complaining, begging petition prayers. In prayer, we have voiced our discontentment, fears, and failures; consequently, the evil spirits are informed by us that their plans have been successful. When you are experiencing negative feelings, rather than praying in your native language, try praying in the spirit. Only the one you are praying to can understand what you are saying, and He is there to help you, not to harm you.
Finally, some have erroneously confused praying in the spirit with the gift of tongues (divers kinds of tongues) which is one of the vocal imparted gifts of the spirit. This gift of tongues is for ministering within the body of believers while praying in the spirit is for your individual benefit.
If you have received the Holy Spirit as recorded in the book of Acts, you now have a secret language to utilize. If you have not used it or failed to realize the benefits that praying in the spirit provides, you are now informed. If you have not prayed in the spirit today, now is a good time to start. Enjoy!

Hello Shepherd Mother,
Can you elaborate on the below except from your post:
“Finally, some have erroneously confused praying in the spirit with the gift of tongues (divers kinds of tongues) which is one of the vocal imparted gifts of the spirit. This gift of tongues is for ministering within the body of believers while praying in the spirit is for your individual benefit.”
So from the above post can you expound upon praying in the spirit vs. the gift of tongues (divers kinds of tongues). So in referencing 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, it talks about praying & singing in the spirit and in words I understand (would this be referring to still praying in the spirit as in your post?) Want to make sure I’m reading the post & scripture correctly.
Thanks! 🙂
The gift of tongues is a spiritual gift for the body(believers). Praying in the spirit is a results of you receiving the Holy Spirit. In Cor. 14 it is talking about both. You can in your own personal time pray and sing in the spirit but when you come to church we are looking for those who have spiritual gifts to utilize them for the edifying of the body.
